About the Race

The St. Croix Fat Cat Triathlon began in 2014 with the intent of showcasing the beautiful Scandia and Marine on St. Croix areas with a day of exercise, food, music, and (most importantly) FUN!   The St. Croix Fat Cat Triathlon is presented by the Scandia-Marine Lions Club and is 100% run and operated by volunteers.  The triathlon raises funds through racer registration fees and our incredible sponsors with all proceeds going back to our communities, education, and Lions causes.

  • All participants should park here and ride the shuttle to Log House Landing start UNLESS they are being dropped off there by a friend.  NOTE: there is absolutely NO PARKING AT THE LANDING FOR RACE START.  Racers can only be dropped off and walk down to start.

  • Shuttles will begin at 7:45 AM for NON-WATERCRAFT RENTAL RACERS ONLY, FOLLOWED AT APPROXIMATELY 8:00 AM FOR THOSE RENTING

  • So, if you are renting a watercraft, you do not need to show up at the shuttle until 8:00 AM OR if you are being dropped by a friend at landing start plan for 8:15 AM

RACE START SATURDAY 8:00 - 8:30 AM -- LOG HOUSE LANDING (20506 Quinnell Avenue N, Scandia, MN 55073)

  • Non-rental racers to start at approx. 8:00 AM followed by those renting watercraft

  • Important - you are required to wear a USGC approved life jacket during the entire paddle leg of this race.  If you are supplying your own canoe or kayak, you must bring your own life jacket or you will not be allowed to race.  If you are renting, a basic life jacket is included, but you may bring your own for better comfort or fit.

  • This is a chip-timed event.  Your time will not start until you are told to cross the line at the top of the descent to the water. This will essentially be done in a continuous single file. You must wear your timing chip on your ankle or your time may not be recorded when crossing timing mats.

  • Just after the 1st Transition Area we have the large pavilion in William O’Brien (located to right on the very beginning of the run course).  You will be able to drop life jackets or any other personal items there and a volunteer will write your race # on a bag.  These bags will be returned to the 2nd Transition/bike area.  We will make a best effort to transfer your items, but you are ultimately responsible for your belongings so we do encourage you to have a friend or teammate transfer your gear. Saint Croix Fat Cat and race volunteers are not responsible for the safety of your belongings.

  • It is strongly suggested that you either wear or bring along your running shoes with you from the start.  If you do not and wish to have your shoes at Transition 1, you are responsible for this yourself or through a support partner waiting at the park.

GENERAL NOTES:

  • Racers must be on their bike to start cycling no later than 11:30 AM or will not be allowed to complete the final leg of the race due to safety reasons.  Volunteer & Wash. Cty. Sheriff will be on duty for Cty. Rd. 3 (Olinda Trl.) crossing until 12:30 PM.  There will be no crossing assistance after 12:30 PM.

  • All racers must wear bike helmets and USCG approved life jackets - NO EXCEPTIONS

  • No sails or any wind, solar, or mechanically assisted devices allowed. No drafting allowed.

  • For safety reasons, we strongly discourage the use of headphones, earbuds, or other listening devices during the race.  However, we are unable to monitor this and you are responsible for your own safety.

  • Volunteer and Washington County Sheriff will be on duty for County Road 3 (Olinda Trail) crossings until 12:30 PM.  There will be no crossing assistance after 12:30 PM.

  • Be safe - ultimately it is up to each participant to be aware and follow the rules of the road.  As volunteers, we do our best to ensure safety, but do NOT assume that this is a closed course!

  • NOTE - All vehicles entering the state park for ANY reason must stop & purchase a day pass upon entering unless said vehicle already has a current permit.

  • Participants or friends must retrieve their watercraft from the State Park the same day and neither State Park employees or any volunteers are responsible for the security of your watercraft or other belongings.
